Building Culinary Skills

Fond du Lac County 4-H hosted a three-day Foodie Theme reaching 15 youth in June. The youth expressed an interest in learning and exploring culinary skills and the food and nutrition project. A Youth leader, Adult Volunteer, 4-H Summer Intern, and 4-H Program Educator led different cooking activities teaching basic cooking skills such as measuring, food safety, and using kitchen tools and appliances safely. Youth learned about washing and preparing fresh fruit and vegetables, how to measure, and adjust recipes, and so much more over the course of three days! Youth prepared themselves lunch every day. Youth worked together over the camp to make recipes giving each youth the opportunity to work in the kitchen on different tasks. Everyone got to take a turn doing the dishes. Some Foodie Camp Creations to highlight were homemade marshmallows, veggie chips, sourdough discard cheese it crackers, grilled cheese sandwiches/quesadillas, yogurt bites, oatmeal peanut butter energy bites, homemade biscuits, scrambled eggs, dirt cups and so much more!  The camp’s goals were that youth would learn something new, be engaging, and increase their interest in the topics. Suggestions were taken from the youth for ideas for the 2025 4-H Foodie Camp.
