Fond du Lac County recently held its very first food summit on Wednesday, September 18th. The event was open to any community members and community organizations. It was held at St. Paul’s Cathedral as a half-day event from 8:30 am -1:00 pm. Nearly 50 participants joined to network and learn, with representation from most of the county’s food pantries and hot meal programs, various state assistance programs and food banks (such as Feeding Wisconsin, Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection/DATCP, etc.), local hospital systems, and government departments. Guest speakers from UW-Madison Division of Extension, the Wisconsin Food Hub Cooperative, May Hill Farms and Lily Pad Daycare, and SSM Health presented on topics relevant to food security, hunger and food systems. Evaluations showed an overwhelmingly positive experience for those that attended the event, with highlights being the guest presentations and the opportunity to network and discuss important topics affecting Fond du Lac County. This event was planned by: Amanda Miller (UW-Madison Extension), Amber Kilawee (Fond du Lac Area United Way), Annie Culver (Broken Bread), Father Patrick Perkins (St. Paul’s Cathedral), Tammi Thurow (Boys Scouts), Dr. Sach Jogal (SSM Health), and Feeding Wisconsin.
