Family Learning Day is one of those events that really shows what 4‑H is all about—giving young people the chance to try new things, learn by doing, and discover what they enjoy. In Fond du Lac County, this annual event plays an important role in helping youth find their sparks, or the interests that motivate them to learn and grow.
This year, 90 youth took part in Family Learning Day, choosing from 45 hands‑on workshops offered throughout the day. Youth signed up for five different sessions, giving them the opportunity to explore a variety of project areas. Some workshops focused on popular projects, while others introduced topics that don’t always have year‑round leaders or resources. This mix allows youth to explore interests they already have and try something completely new.
Feedback from the day shows just how meaningful the experience was. Ninety‑eight percent of participants said the sessions were fun and engaging, and 89% reported learning something new. Many youth shared that the workshops increased their interest in the topic and gave them the chance to try something they had never done before. Nearly all participants also said instructors were helpful and supportive, creating a welcoming environment for learning.
Youth comments summed it up best, with many saying things like, “This was super cool,” “I learned something new,” and “I love Family Learning Day.” Several shared that the sessions made them excited to keep learning at home.
Family Learning Day supports more than just project skills. It helps youth build confidence, problem‑solving skills, and a positive attitude toward learning, while also bringing families together around shared experiences. Looking ahead, interest from youth in helping lead future workshops shows how this event continues to grow leadership and spark curiosity across our 4‑H program and community.
