A major focus of Extension’s community development work in Fond du Lac County has been developing an asset mapping and gap analysis process to better understand where community resources exist, where access may be limited, and where additional conversations are needed. This work includes compiling information about local organizations, services, partnerships, and geographic service areas, then comparing that information with community indicators such as housing pressure, poverty, transportation access, food access, aging populations, and youth and family needs.
This process has led to a preliminary gap report that is now helping guide deeper conversations with local partners and stakeholders. The report is not intended to be a final conclusion, but rather a starting point for discussion, validation, and shared learning. Alongside this work, I am also researching best practices for root cause analysis so future conversations can move beyond identifying gaps and toward understanding the underlying factors that contribute to them. As the work continues, Extension can help identify patterns, connect organizations around shared priorities, and support data-informed planning efforts across the county.
